To See & Do

Waldhaus Redwood Retreat is surrounded by a number of parks and preserves, and in addition there are trails that are accessible directly from the property. 

Portola Redwoods State Park (0-5 minutes): Waldhaus borders the state park, and is 5 minutes drive to the park office. Eighteen miles of trails follow meandering creeks, where moisture-loving coast redwoods stand tall among ferns and huckleberries. Waterfalls on Fall and Pescadero creeks tumble down mossy banks over rocks and woody debris. Day use hours are 6am-sunset.

Russian Ridge Open Preserve (15 minutes): In spring, the preserve preserve has showy display of wildflowers. In summer, the hills turn to gold with the late evening sunlight. Autumn, when the fog recedes, is the ideal time to enjoy the ridge views of San Francisco Bay and the Santa Cruz Mountains.  Open daily 7am-7pm.

Thomas Fogarty Winery (20 minutes): Friendly staff and a welcoming atmosphere. Wines are good quality and tastings range from affordable to expensive. Outdoor patio for enjoying your wine is a great plus. On a clear day you could see the Bay and San Francisco. 19501 Skyline Blvd.  Open Wed-Sun. 12pm-4pm, Mon 12pm-4pm, Tue closed.

Memorial Park at Loma Mar (20 minutes): The 673 acres park provides an opportunity to view outstanding old-growth redwoods and has picnic facilities, a visitor center, a camp store, and a creek swimming area.  Day use hours are 8am-sunset.

Pomponio State BeachPescadero State Beach and Bean Hollow State Beach (40-50 minutes): This area provides access to miles of gently sloping, sandy beaches at the base of high sandstone bluffs. This day-use facility features a small lagoon, roaring surf - and a wide parking area, picnic tables, and barbecues.  Open daily 8am-sunset.

La Honda Market (20 minutes): A great market and a critical local resource. Wonderful home-made pizza.  Carry a lot of the locally-made food and crafts.  8865 La Honda Rd, La Honda.  Open daily 7am-8pm.

Alice Restaurant (25 minutes): This is a rustic restaurant with homey food and great service.  We love the brisket sandwich and tuna melt.  Can be busy on the weekends.  17288 Skyline Blvd, Woodside.  Open daily 8am-9pm.

Durate’s Tavern (40 minutes): This coastal tradition offers patrons old-school American eats amid its knotty-pine-paneled dining room.  202 Stage Rd, Pescadero.  Open daily 7am-8pm.

Pescadero Country Store (40 minutes): Fresh, flavorful, local food to enjoy on premise or as take out.  Live music to accompany a weekend picnic lunch.  A great selection of grocery and gift items for visitors and local residents alike.  251 Stage Road, Pescadero.  Open Sun-Thu 9am-7pm, Fri-Sat 9am-8pm.

Highway 1 Brewing Company (50 minutes): Delicious food from locally source ingredients.  Wide selections of house brews.  5720 Cabrillo Highway, Pescadero.  Open daily 11am-10pm.
